The venerable 15th-century Villa La Striscia, which has given its name to the overall estate in the hills that surround Arezzo, was once the summer retreat of the Occhini family. But it signified, too, the idea of the Tuscan countryside, and the close sentimental bond with this land and with its history. Today the winery is directed by Ilaria Occhini, daughter of Gioconda Papini and Barna Occhini, with the assistance of her daughter Alexandra, niece Caterina and nephew Bernardino Occhini, all involved personally in the various activities. Between the late 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, Barna and his brother Simone made the first significant improvements in the vineyards, re-planting them in the best exposures around the villa and focusing on sangiovese. Most of the estate vineyards are planted in fact to this variety, and here it truly achieves its characteristic forthrightness, elegance, and complexity, the qualities so consonant with ancient Tuscan tradition. In 1999 Ilaria Occhini took over direction of the winery, and in 2000 she decided upon an ambitious project to upgrade the image of the winery, by re-structuring the vineyards and developing a wine that would stand alongside the best Tuscan red wines.
